The power of purpose

Building community through service

Posted

This month, the Wenatchee Business Journal shines a spotlight on one of the region’s most powerful economic and social engines — our nonprofit sector. Across North Central Washington, these organizations do more than fill gaps. They build bridges, strengthen families, and create a sense of belonging that reaches far beyond any one program or project.

At Columbia Valley Community Health, care extends far past the clinic walls. Their mission — to partner with the community to achieve health and wellness with compassion and respect — is lived out in every interaction. Whether through their East Wenatchee expansion or mobile clinics that reach H-2A workers and rural families, CVCH demonstrates that true healthcare is as much about trust as it is about treatment.

The Chelan-Douglas Community Action Council reminds us that solving big problems starts close to home. Under Alan Walker’s leadership, the organization coordinates housing, food, and basic needs across two counties — empowering people to define success on their own terms. With over 40 grants and hundreds of volunteers, CDCAC’s model is one of partnership, accountability, and compassion in action.

Culture, too, plays a vital role in resilience. The Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center and the Numerica Performing Arts Center show how creativity builds community connection. Their leaders, Marriah Thornock and Alex Haley, are proving that the arts aren’t just entertainment — they’re the heartbeat of a place, reminding us who we are and what we share.

Philanthropy ties it all together. At the Community Foundation of North Central Washington, Executive Director Beth Stipe leads with a belief that “good grows here.” The Foundation’s reach — now more than $180 million in assets — is powered not by billionaires, but by teachers, orchardists, and small-business owners who care deeply about their neighbors. Their generosity funds scholarships, supports nonprofits, and ensures that opportunities endure for generations.

And collaboration remains the common thread. From Upper Valley MEND’s Community Cupboard to Our Valley Our Future, the spirit of partnership across hundreds of organizations is what makes this region unique. Together, they weave a safety net strong enough to catch those who fall — and broad enough to lift everyone a little higher.

Nonprofits remind us that business isn’t just about balance sheets — it’s about balance in our communities. They prove that when we give our time, our dollars, or simply our attention, we invest in something far greater: the shared well-being of our neighbors.

As we enter this season of gratitude and giving, may these stories inspire us to see service not as charity, but as community — and to remember that in North Central Washington, the power of purpose is what holds us all together.
