Seizing the AI Moment: Microsoft Elevate Positions Washington’s Youth at the Frontlines of Global Innovation

Posted

Microsoft has just positioned young people in Washington at the frontlines of global innovation. With the launch of Microsoft Elevate Washington, every public high school and community college student in the state will have free access to advanced AI tools including Copilot and Microsoft 356, and educators will have expanded access to training support, grants, research and national partnerships to support implementation.

As a global technology leader, Microsoft could have launched this work anywhere. Their decision to do it here, at home, in Washington, is extraordinary. It signals a powerful belief that the next generation of innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders is already here. It is an investment in our state’s people, public institutions, and shared capacity to shape the future of work.

The opportunity now belongs to local educators, community leaders, businesses, and students across the state to seize this moment with curiosity, courage, and collective impact.

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a distant concept. It’s a transformative technology and an  everyday tool reshaping how we live, learn, and work. Global development will continue to advance at an accelerated rate, and access to AI tools will increasingly define competitiveness, creativity, and opportunity. With this investment Microsoft’s given Washington students a rare head start in developing the skills that will drive nearly every industry in the coming decades.

These are not just software tools; they are essential building blocks of opportunity, designed to help young people learn how to reason, create, and problem-solve in entirely new ways.

Already, North Central Washington is demonstrating a readiness to rise to this challenge. Regional collaborations between educators, employers, and community organizations are aligning around the shared belief that good ideas happen everywhere; and, that when they do, access to the right tools and training is essential to develop those ideas into realized potential. Early data sets emphasize the regional readiness to capitalize on these advancements. According to Microsoft’s AI Diffusion in Washington report, adult adoption rates already range from 9 to 28 percent across the region: Douglas County (28.2), Chelan County (25.2), Grant County (22.6), and Okanogan County (9.3).

King (32.1) and Snohomish (35) counties are just slightly ahead, with about one-third of adults already using AI daily, but many areas of the state still lag behind. The data signals that North Central Washington is in a strong position to grow and these tools can help to maintain productivity and competitiveness as we develop AI enabled talent for local industries like agriculture, energy, healthcare, and manufacturing.

There is growing recognition that North Central Washington is positioned to have a significant part in Washington’s next chapter of innovation, and the Elevate Washington investment creates an opportunity to advance the skills and alignment of the next-generation workforce in these sectors.

Local partners including Big Bend Community College, NCW Tech Alliance, SkillSource, Central Washington University, and the Quincy School District joined the state summit in October at the announcement of this historic initiative. They share a common understanding that how we respond to this opportunity will determine whether our region simply participates in change or helps lead it.

The steps we take now will shape how fully we capture the benefits of this access for individuals and communities across North Central Washington:

  • Empowering educators through professional development and peer support.
  • Building workforce pathways that connect AI literacy to real industry needs.
  • Expanding digital access programs that meet individuals where they are with the right level, location and language
  • Strengthening partnerships across schools, colleges, community organizations, policy makers and industry leaders to coordinate progress.

If we meet this moment with curiosity, courage, and collaboration, this investment will be remembered not just as a technology launch, but as the start of a generation ready to imagine, build, and lead from right here at home.
