Manson’s Old Swim Hole: An Opportunity We Can’t Afford to Lose

Posted

Thank you for bringing attention to the urgent funding challenge facing Manson’s Old Swim Hole restoration project. With the November 15 deadline approaching and approximately $375,000 still needed, I hope this coverage will be a catalyst for action across our valley.

After years of planning, hard work, and more than $1.8 million in funding secured, we cannot afford to let this opportunity slip away. Construction bids came in higher than anticipated, creating a funding shortfall that must be addressed to move the project forward. If the remaining funds cannot be secured, the project could face significant delays, and Manson Park & Recreation District may have to wait until the 2028–2029 funding cycle to apply again. Who knows what funding opportunities or priorities will look like then?

Bridging this gap will take a concerted effort. I hope our Chelan County Commissioners, state legislators, U.S. Representative Kim Schrier’s office, Chelan PUD, the Chelan Douglas Regional Port Authority, the Lake Chelan Reclamation District, and private philanthropic donors will help identify and secure the resources needed to move this project forward. Each has different responsibilities and resources, but bringing the right people to the table now could make a meaningful difference.

The restored Old Swim Hole would expand waterfront access for local families enjoying swimming, paddleboards, kayaks, and time with their dogs. The proposed boardwalk connector between Manson Bay Park and Old Swim Hole would also improve pedestrian access to the waterfront for people of all ages. This is an investment in public access, recreation, and the quality of life we value in this valley.

I have enjoyed visiting Manson and Lake Chelan for 20 years and have been fortunate to call Manson home for the past three. What makes this place special is not just its beautiful setting and rich history, but its creative, vibrant community and the people who care deeply about its future.

If you can contribute financially, please contact Robin Pittman at Manson Park & Recreation District before November 15. To discuss donations or other ways to help, contact the District at info@mansonparks.com or 509-687-9635. If you can help open doors, consider writing to our county commissioners, PUD, state and federal representatives, or other potential funding partners to express your support and ask what solutions may be possible.

It will take a concerted effort to secure the remaining funds, but this valley has a strong tradition of people working together to accomplish meaningful things.

For our families, our community, and the generations who will call this valley home, let's not let this opportunity slip away. Let's see what we can accomplish together.

René Commons, Manson
