Wenatchee Foothills Trails reopen for outdoor recreation on April 1

Posted

WENATCHEE -- The Wenatchee Foothills trail systems will reopen for outdoor recreation on Monday, April 1, according to a joint announcement by Chelan PUD, City of Wenatchee, and Chelan-Douglas Land Trust (CDLT).

The trails in the Wenatchee foothills are closed annually from December 1 to April 1 to provide winter refuge for mule deer and other wildlife. Von Pope, Chelan PUD Wildlife Biologist, said, "The early green-up of the foothills provided the first good source of calories in months for the mule deer. We want to thank everyone for giving them space this winter."

Chelan PUD manages the Home Water Wildlife Preserve, which spans about 960 acres in the heart of Sage Hills, as part of its federal license to operate Rock Island Dam. The winter closures are a condition of the permitted seasonal trail use. Additionally, Chelan-Douglas Land Trust and the City of Wenatchee close public access to more than 2,200 acres of adjacent open space to provide additional winter range for wildlife.

This spring, CDLT will be conducting trail maintenance work across the Foothills, starting with the Saddle Rock Traverse Trail. Jennifer Hadersberger, Director for Climate, Access, and Stewardship, said, "Trail users will see intermittent trail closures as sections of trail are improved to make them more sustainable in the future."

In addition to trail improvements, CDLT invites everyone to sign up for upcoming events to get outdoors and connect with nature. Trail Ambassadors will be present at different trailheads in the Wenatchee Foothills, collecting trail user data and welcoming visitors.

Starting in early April, Chelan PUD crews will be working in Horse Lake Reserve to replace four wooden transmission structures with fire-resistant steel. The project is expected to take a month, and trails are expected to remain open during this time. However, visitors are advised to be vigilant and maintain a safe distance from the work area.

The reopening of the Wenatchee Foothills trails offers an excellent opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to explore the beautiful landscapes and enjoy recreational activities while respecting the wildlife and their habitats.
