BREWSTER – A scene played out in community centers, churches, and goodwill hubs across the nation unfolded Thanksgiving Day at Columbia Post 97 of the Brewster American Legion when the public was invited to share holiday diner.

The annual event drew scores to the tables spread with staples including turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, and more, not to mention the wide variety of desserts prepared by many generous donors in the area.

Post Commander Greg Wagg put out the call for volunteers on the Legion’s Facebook site and reliably they responded. Friends and neighbors who otherwise might have spent spend a quiet day at home dined with family and broke bread with acquaintances.

An added attraction at this year’s gathering was the opportunity to place written bids on an array of silent auction items that feature something for every taste. Artwork, tools, craft, sports apparel, home furnishings, decorations, and gift certificates are just part of the available items. The auction started on Nov. 21 and continues through 8 p.m. Nov. 29.

The dining atmosphere was warm and welcoming and all who dropped in no doubt hope the ritual repeats next year.
